There once was a child born with extraordinary capabilities. Able to hear frequencies of up to 300kHz, the child would tell his parents and siblings of all the wondrous sounds, from the tiniest of ants chirping to one another to the loudest calls of the sperm whale, hundreds of miles away. The child’s parents thought him strange and had no time for his nonsense. His siblings mocked him and called him names. They would not play with him nor would they listen when he told them what horses talk about. Chastising him, his parents instructed him to put his hands over his ears to block out the sounds…this confused the child because the sounds made him laugh, sing and dance. His parents angry scowls frightened him and so he began to cover his ears. Eventually, he could no longer hear the sound of grass gently bending in the wind, flowers yawning and stretching toward the sun, bear cubs growling as they wrestled and played. The child grew despondent and confused. His parents, seeing he was a lazy child, put him to work. Chores would keep him occupied and the silliness of his “hearing” would be a thing of the past. The child worked and worked some more until he grew into adulthood. The child now a man can still hear lovely sounds but there is something missing…shaking his head, he calls himself foolish, a silly dreamer who makes up stories that simply are not true.
The man knows now what is real and what isn’t. Things he can see and then touch, real matter is all that matters. These can be trusted. The calls he hears come from other real people that believe as he does, in things and stuff that exist and can be located in time and space. When told there is more, so much more, he scoffs and mocks and suggests perhaps some earmuffs, to block out the ridiculous sounds? Noise is also suggested, if the earmuffs prove ineffective.
Born with perfect extraordinary capabilities, the child was made deaf over time and eventually, muted too. He could not hear and so he could not speak of the wondrous things that used to make him laugh, sing and dance. This broke many hearts, because his gift was taken from the world and there were people like him that needed his unique talents to harmonize with their own. In their sadness, they long for him to hear once again, the call of hearts, theirs to his…and they hope.
